David realised a dream last week, when he got to go back to his old station. David, who worked at Meldreth Train Station from 1999 – 2014, wanted to see the picture that colleagues at the station had put up in his honour, but doubted that he would be able to go on a train again . However, Lea-Ann, our Activities Co-ordinator at Margaret House, in Barley, where he now lives was determined to make this a reality. So, she arranged a special day out for him to travel back to Meldreth Station by train.
Once there, he got to meet some old colleagues and look around the station, the highlight being seeing his photo displayed in the ticket office. During his time working there he went above and beyond what his normally expected and was extremely well known and liked by local commuters. He had been recognised for providing ‘Outstanding Customer Service’ in the Royston Business Awards, as he used to offer tea and coffee to his customers and had even been known to phone regular travellers at home if their train was running late! The current staff presented him with a copy of his special retirement book and the photos that were on display. David was excited to continue his day by going on to have a look around the new Cambridge North station, although his verdict was that it was ‘Very big and modern with thousands of pounds spent on it, but with nowhere to get a cup of tea! But all in all, it had been an excellent day out.”
